Like so many bands, Vortxz, the headliner for the next installment in UHD’s Thursday Night Concert Series, was born after a small performance for some close friends. Unlike most bands, Vortxz has gone from that first pop-up show in front of 15 people to playing tours on both coasts (or all three coasts, one supposes), and developing their alternative rock and indie sound into something that is refreshingly unique in contemporary music given its Latino influences.
The four band members—Rambo, Jon, Luar, and Noe—all hail from Houston, and are known for blending sad lyrics with rhythms that make you want to dance. Speaking with Voyage Houston, Rambo, the group’s writer, said Vortxz loves “blending chorusy guitars with post-punk drum beats and funky bass lines…Vortxz is not just a band but a story and a place, from which anyone from anywhere can escape to, dance, cry, sing, and forget about the hardships of life.”
Opening for Vortxz on May 30 are Astragal as well as Blossom Aloe. Named after the 1965 semi-autobiographic novel by Albertine Sarrazin, Astragal is a three-piece band that blends post-punk and indie-rock with pedal-soaked sounds for an entirely immersive experience. Blossom Aloe is an indie rock quintet that fuses elements of bedroom-pop, psychedelia and alternative rock into their sound.
Guests are welcome to bring blankets, camping chairs and snacks. Please leave alcohol and glass containers at home. Food, beer and wine are available for purchase at The Lake House at Discovery Green.
