SOLSTICE

A space of ever-changing colors and soundscapes

Discovery Green invites visitors to interact with the newest art installation, Solstice, by Studio Iregular, from Nov. 11, 2022 through Feb. 14, 2023 on the Brown Promenade.

The piece, commissioned by the Discovery Green Conservancy, places the audience in a space of ever-changing colors and soundscapes created by frames, mirrors, and a central sun.

Solstice is comprised of a series of mirrored and LED arches that reflect the transformation of Earth when the sun is at its closest and furthest from the equator. Guests will be able to experience the longest day of the year to the shortest in an explorative and interactive format.

The explorative experience invites the audience to stroll inside the space as the frames change colors at dusk or dawn. Guests can also choose to change the speed and direction of the sun, influencing the sound and color.

Solstice was designed for Discovery Green’s 15th anniversary celebration and supported by a grant from The Brown Foundation, Inc. It is on view daily during park hours, 6 am to 11 pm

A full schedule of public art programming sponsored by PNC Bank will provide visitors hands-on educational opportunities through family art workshops, and art experiences such as dance performances, a candle-lit labyrinth walk accompanied by a winter solstice sound bath, and a Lunar New Year Celebration.

THIS EVENT IS LOCATED @

Brown Foundation Promenade

This limestone path is shaded by majestic 100-year-old oak trees. The largest oak is the Nancy G. Kinder Oak, one of four large live oaks moved to the park during construction. In honor of George R. Brown’s instrumental role in shaping downtown Houston as we know it today, a bronze statue of him stands under the allee of oaks on the promenade – exactly where he would feel most at home.
