Photos: Discovery Green PRISM members and artists gather to support The TUNNEL by BIG ART opening night

Discovery Green’s current interactive art installation, The TUNNEL by BIG ART is celebrating its first week on display in the park. About 50 artists, enthusiasts and PRISM members gathered at The Lake House on a rainy evening to celebrate its opening on Thursday, September 5. Visitors were treated to a talk from BIG ART’s Paul Magnuson who spoke about his process, inspiration and background as an artist.

The evening offered Houston’s art lovers the opportunity to learn more about the inaugural Art Lab fellows, Karen Navarro and Gerardo Rosales. Art Lab is Discovery Green’s groundbreaking mentorship program designed to support underrepresented local artists with the skills and resources necessary to expand their practices into large-scale, interactive sculptural outdoor public works. Funded by an anonymous national foundation, Art Lab will provide Navarro and Rosales an apprenticeship, practicum and honorarium of $4,500 to work with a team of mentors including internationally renowned, Brooklyn-based artist/engineer Jen Lewin

PRISM members are a group of supporters who champion Discovery Green’s arts and culture programming. PRISM members invest in the park and Houston’s artists, musicians and other professional creatives. In exchange they get access to behind-the-scenes receptions, private art collection tours, culinary experiences and more. Become a member today at www.discoverygreen.com/prism.

You can explore The TUNNEL at Discovery Green through October 6. This interactive art installation was created by the Canadian group Big Art and the tour producer is Creos.
